I sat beside Ethan Knight in the back seat of the darkened limo, a mess of nerves and desire. I wasn’t used to feeling either. The man was the epitome of perfection, from the long hair I hadn’t expected, to the light scruff on his face, to the casual way he wore his expensive suit, the white shirt unbuttoned just enough to tease me with his hint of chest hair peeking through. And the way he smelled? All man with a delicious hint of musk.
The guys I was used to from college were boys in comparison to Ethan Knight, and I more than felt the difference both in my body’s reaction to him and in his response to me. Oh, he tried to keep a respectful distance, but I didn’t miss the way his stare zeroed in on mine when I was with other people, how he watched me with interest in his gaze that had nothing to do with convincing me to attend business school in New York City.
I’d had enough half sisters fall in love for me to be well aware of what chemistry between two people was like. And Ethan and I had chemistry in spades.
Shocking sexual desire made me aware of my body for the first time, causing a slickness between my thighs and a yearning I wasn’t going to find easily in men back home. Ethan was intelligent and aloof, qualities that didn’t put me off because of the type of men in the family in which I’d grown up.
In the past, I’d dated, I’d made out with guys, but ultimately, I’d kept my distance, at least from any significant relationships, and for good reason. My life had always been serious, from my childhood illness to my family drama, and though I didn’t act or live in the shadows, I wanted someone who could handle everything that came along with me.
I knew better than to create fairy tales. My parents’ relationship had taught me that happily ever after came with strings. Sometimes with another family. So I’d waited for just the right person to be with.
I leaned my head against the headrest and glanced at Ethan. A man, not a boy. The more I thought about school, the less likely it became that I’d go. So one night with a guy I wanted beyond reason before I would head back to Miami, where I belonged?
Everything inside me screamed yes. Ethan was the right one.
I could handle the distance he attempted to put between us and was more than willing to try and breach it. I just needed to work up my nerve, and the charged silence between us in the car gave me time to think.
To plan.
The car pulled to a stop in front of the familiar building in which I was staying. To my surprise, Ethan climbed out first, then waited for me to join him.
I assumed he was saying good night, which meant I’d have to make my move.
“Are you ready to go up?” Ethan asked.
I blinked at him. If he planned on walking me to my door, I didn’t have to attack him in the street, in front of the driver.
My stomach was bouncing with nerves as he guided me into the building.
“Mr. Knight,” the doorman said. “Welcome home.”
“Thank you, John. Have a nice evening.” He placed a hand on my back and guided me toward the elevators.
I glanced up at him. “Home? Sierra mentioned your family owned the building, but she didn’t say any of you lived here.”
His grin was as surprising as it was infectious. “Penthouse,” he explained, a man of few words, as usual.
We stepped into an open elevator, and he hit the second floor, where I was staying. A few seconds later, I was standing in front of my door, Ethan beside me.
He braced a hand above my head, leaning closer than would be appropriate for our supposed positions. I took it as a sign.
“I hope you enjoyed yourself,” he said.
“The night was more than I hoped for.” I spoke the truth. He was more than I’d hoped for. “You were an excellent host.”
The silence between us was charged, my heart beating rapidly in my chest, possibilities soaring through my brain.
“Good night, Sienna.” He spoke but he didn’t leave.
I couldn’t bring myself to use the key I’d taken out of my purse, either.
I stared up at him, unable to break eye contact, and forced myself to utter the words I needed to say. “Please stay.”
